My students are always asking me, "Can I work around the room?" and "Do I have to stay in my seat?". I always turn it back to the students. Can you work there successfully? Will you be able to do your second grade best? If the answer is yes, then go for it! When you walk into my classroom, I want you to see a place where every child is engaged, focused, and comfortable. I also want you to see a place where each child is valued and is given a choice. The students control their own learning experience. I am implementing flexible seating in my classroom because I truly believe in it, and so do my students. In my classroom, you will find students sitting on the floor, laying on carpets, sitting in chairs and on stools, and standing. My classroom is not one size fits all. Not every student works best in the same place. That also means the freedom to wiggle and move around! My students have asked for more seating options, and that is what this project would provide. The items I have requested will give my students other seating options while also providing the opportunity for movement. This project would allow me to incorporate two things I truly believe in: movement and student choice. Physical movement enhances brain development. Movement also allows students to use up excess energy, burn more calories, and improve their core strength, posture, and balance. Most importantly, it allows students to have increased motivation and engagement. Choice is equally as important. Choice allows the students to develop responsibility as they think through the decision of where they can work successfully. That can be so empowering for a child. I would love to enhance my students’ learning experience by providing this opportunity.
