My students love to play instruments! With children, there is something magical about striking a drum, hearing the unique sounds it makes, and knowing you produced that sound. While aural experiences in music are so important, it's been found that students respond particularly well to physical music education. We are requesting 14 frame drums to help foster their musicality and rhythm. Playing drums in class enables music to be both an aural and physical experience, a huge benefit in building musical skill and ability. The drums will be used both in everyday class as well as in performance for the community. Students will use these hand drums in class to keep the beat, to practice improvisation, and in creative writing, all of which are state standards and important musical skills to develop. Students will also have furthered performance opportunities through class drum ensembles and small group performances. My students show great enthusiasm for playing instruments and this project will only help enhance the learning and joy found in music.
