Computers are great tools for any classroom, but especially special education classrooms. My special education classroom got five new touch screen computers, and they are fabulous. The students love the opportunity to build on the knowledge they already know and it allows to them to practice what is taught. Although, I received these brand new computers, I did not get any headphones to go with them. When my students come in my classroom they are broken into groups and they rotate to different stations around the room. Two of the stations use computers. Imagine having a disability and trying to write, read, or work with the teacher when there is constant noise from multiple computers in the background. My students are currently going through that struggle everyday. Not only is it difficult for the students who are not on the computers but it is also difficult for the students who are on the computers. Due to their age or their disability, most of my students can either not read at all or they are incapable of reading independently because of this they listen to stories read to them on the computer. Also, my ELA curriculum has a beneficial online component that the students also get to use everyday. How are my students capable of focusing on the story being read to them when they can only hear the game on the computer beside them? My students desperately need headphones in order to use the resources available to them and resources that will better the knowledge of what is being taught.
