Aloha! Each year, I work with 700+ students teaching school garden programs at an elementary and an intermediate school on Maui, Hawai`i. Our intermediate school is Title I, with 47% of our students meeting eligibility criteria. Many students rely on free and reduced lunch programs to get two meals a day at school. In the garden, students use hands-on learning outdoors to explore science, nature, sustainability, nutrition, and cooking. A typical garden class begins with checking on the plants, a lesson about the science or agricultural concepts we will apply, working to care for the garden, and then wrapping up with a snack of fresh food we harvested together. These classes are especially important for students who struggle in the confines of the classroom. Beyond that, through garden classes students get to make a difference in their school communities and connect with nature and the `aina (the land). Mahalo!
