These material will help my students continue to learn through engaging and research based text. A subscription to Scholastic News will help them to learn how to read current events, learn about new finding around the world and give them some understanding of the world outside of their own city. Many of these students have never traveled outside of Philadelphia and have a hard time understanding that their is more to the state, country and globe then their immediate surroundings. In our classroom, we focus on academics to help become as strong as they can, functional skills are also very important because some of the intellectual and social challenges the students face. Functional skills are important to our curriculum as well to ensure their success within the community. Some of these skills include following directions, following a step by step guide (words or pictures), learning basic cooking skills, problem solving (starting with thinking about step by step thoughts), etc. Geo Sticks and sequencing activities will all help to build this basic skills to help student be successful in the community later on.
