Sometimes my students just need to take a break. These children face many different obstacles in their personal lives and sometimes they can't just "leave that at the door," as people say. I want to make sure that my students have a safe and comfortable place to go and spend some time cooling down and getting into learning mode for the day. This area will include fidget toys, a comfortable chair, some coloring pages, and a sand timer for students to monitor their break time. Or maybe my student might be feeling frustrated with a task or frustrated with another student or just frustrated at me! I need to make sure they have a place to escape for a while and be able to come back once they're centered again. Like in any special education class, my students may need different types of materials in order to help them be successful. Some students may need kick bands to keep moving their feet so they aren't up and walking around, or some students need to move their entire body and can do so using wobble stools at their desks. One of my students was always up and out of his chair while I was teaching, and it was distracting to myself and his classmates. One day I asked him why he was always out of his seat, and he just said he couldn't keep his body still. From then on, I utilized kick bands, but by the end of the year he had gone through the few that I had. While this was just one positive example in my classroom, with the school year starting up I know I need to have different options for all of the different needs of my students.
