My Students: History comes alive in our room. Students don't learn about maps, they become cartographers and create them using plaster. Students don't read about history, they live it by acting out important events. Students become citizens by debating the validity of each Amendment in the Bill of Rights. We are a high achieving Title I school with more than 60% of our students living below the poverty line. Many of our families have left behind lives in their countries of birth to pursue the American Dream. They work two and three jobs to support the education of their children. They have sacrificed for their most prized possessions, their children. Over 2/3 of our students will be first generation college students. We live in the shadow of Washington DC though many have never visited the city. They are separated by more than a ride on the Metro. The scientists and historians of our room possess their parents' work ethic. They are resilient learners and caring citizens. They know the value of hard work and the importance of treating others with respect and kindness. They are educated in more than academics.
