My students began learning about the metric system and really enjoyed the hands on experience by using rulers and a tape measure. Currently my students share 1 science lab with the whole school, therefore scheduling and supplies can be limited. A triple beam balance will be used to calculate the weight of various rocks so the students can learn about measurement and mass. The greatest benefit of this project is that all students can partake in this activity regardless of the language barriers present. Additionally, working in groups with the triple beam balance will help the students develop the skills they need in science while building camaraderie. The content material provides an excellent source of a rich vocabulary, reinforce math, and working in groups will create lasting friendships. All these skills will help them achieve academic success and aid in their social development skills.
