Each adult has his or her own taste in books-- the same is true for students. As adults, we know it's fun to talk about what we've read or watched with others-- the same is true for students. The goal of my project is get my students excited about a book by offering them choices from genres and authors that speak to them. I am implementing a literature circle program in my classroom, where each month students will select a book that they will read with 2-3 friends. On Fridays, they will meet to discuss it, much like a book club, but the discussions will be focused on the areas we're studying in class (though they can, of course, deepen those conversations). They will direct themselves on how far to read each week, and which parts of the tasks they will tackle when. For this to be successful, my students need options: books they want to read, instead of books they are forced to read. They need options not just for one round, but for 4-5 rounds each school year.
