This year our fourth grade classes are learning about Westward Expansion in the United States including the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Yukon Gold Rush. However, we are teaching these lessons from the perspective of the Native Americans. A biography about Sacagawea will teach us about the Corps of Discovery, we'll do in-depth projects on local Native American tribes, and dive into the real effects white settlers had on the land and the Native people. The best way for students to learn is for them to experience something vibrant and authentic. This is why we want our fourth graders to be able to go to Blake Island and explore Tillicum Village. On this unique adventure students will take a ferry to Blake Island where they will have a traditional Coast Salish feast in a long house; learn about the clothes, art, and culture of the Coast Salish tribe; see a thrilling traditional performance; and explore the picturesque views and gorgeous beaches of the island.
