My students are in a 12:1:1 classroom setting in an alternate assessment special education high school in Brooklyn, New York. They all have some degree of mental retardation, some with secondary diagnoses (i.e. autism). Because many of them are at a very low reading and writing level, they often work best with hands-on activities and visual props. They are eager to learn and love working on projects; it gives them a sense of accomplishment. My students are respectful young adults who get along well with each other and with staff. They are a great group and I am lucky to be their teacher!
