I believe these Geometric Solids are just one of the keys that will help my students unlock the door to deeper mathematical thought. Putting the students in the driver's seat and allowing them to discover how to find the area, surface area, and volume before being given the formulas will only increase their level of understanding and increase their interest. These tools will help form connections between the numbers and letters on the page and real-life examples they will encounter in everyday life outside my classroom today and tomorrow. Geometry is a topic often found at the end of textbooks, and if teachers get to it, it is near the end of the year around state testing in which many students are drained and need something to excite them.
