This will be my first year teaching art. If I'm being totally honest, I feel unprepared in many ways. I just finished my first year teaching fourth grade and am now moving to art. Even though I have many many things to learn, the one thing I know for sure is that my students deserve to have an engaging and fulfilling education. Since our school is a low income, high poverty school funding is very low. We have to fight for every penny that comes our way. They deserve the very best. Not only would this project help students in the fine arts, it would help them craft those high order thinking skills. It would expand and open their minds to a bigger and broader world. A pottery wheel would help them grow in areas they would not have a chance of growing in in later years. I want to be able to give my student every piece and opportunity to learn by giving them experiences. Learning is most effective when it is done through experiences. A pottery wheel gives my students a chance to feel the clay, move the wheel, smell the aroma, and hear it in action. This experience could open up the door to a new hobby, an outlet, or even a career choice! If we received a pottery wheel, it would be such a gift to these students, and a blessing to me.
