Though our students are considered at-risk due to the our vicinity in a major metropolitan city, our lack of funding, and our large minority population, I would describe our students as open-minded inquirers, ready to turn traditional schooling on its ear, and take risks with a new International Baccalaureate curriculum. Our students are here because they are CHOOSING to be; they want to challenge themselves and be better prepared for college. Many of them will be the first in their families to graduate high school, but they are not willing to stop there. They are making big plans for college! At our school, we put a lot of emphasis on being a contributing part of the community by making sure that we are laying firm foundations with our students' families and organizing service opportunities that give back. What you put in, you get back; our students feel the love, hard work, and dedication from our staff, and that is what they bring back to us. I've never seen anything like it!
