Through this project, I hope the students will come to realize that although the struggle of being a parent and teen at the same time is real, it is worthy of all the toil they will endure to achieve success. Co-Parenting, Custody Agreements, and College Applications are an everyday reality for many of the students at our school. Teen moms and dads drop their little ones off at our onsite daycare then hesitantly scurry away to class in hopes of securing the best future they possibly can for their child, as well as, themselves. Most of our students are African American and Hispanic; over half of them have children who would be considered Afro-Latino or Bi-racial, so they are dealing with cultural and identity issues as well. The books in this project are relatable to the lives of a lot of our students. This will give us a kick start to successful interesting reading before we tackle the classics. The previously mentioned texts will be used as a base for discovering and developing a student lead project, which will include the standards for English classes. Student interest in the topics that truly resonate with them on an academic and personal level, will lead to desire, success, and development of necessary skills to ensure an empowered human.
