My students attend a small inner city school, with a student population of under 600. My students are 100% minorities (95% African American 5% Hispanic), all from economically disadvantage households. The majority live in crime filled neighborhoods. These students are impoverished and have extensive exposure to television, popular music and video games. Many of these kids are deprived of print material. So to provide these students regular access to books, magazines, and newspapers of their own choosing would be ideal, since much of their time is spent in the school. It is the best way to incorporate a variety of print material into their everyday life.
