The students at my school have enjoyed coming to music and learning to play different instruments in the classroom: xylophones, recorders, drums, and other classroom instruments. Now, they are ready for a new challenge-to play a string instrument, the ukulele. Learning the ukulele will give fifth graders the chance to learn a string instrument and learn to play melodic, harmonic, chordal techniques as well as singing at the same time. Students are learning hand/eye coordination, and fine and gross motor skills. Music and literacy can combine to create contextual learning opportunities across subject areas. Students will build on existing knowledge while quickly learning ukulele skills.
