Today's students struggle with the various skills required in English Language Arts classes -- their reading comprehension abilities are several grade levels behind; their writing is weak and lacking in thought; their metacognitive abilities are underdeveloped to nonexistent. It is my belief that students' issues in all of these areas stem from a lack of practice in the acts of reading and discussing literature. So the question I have struggled with all year has been: How do I encourage my students to WANT to read? After ruminating on this question for several months it occurred to me that the best way to encourage my students to enhance their literacy skill is to meet them where they are. In order to meet them where they are, I would like to connect my students to accessible forms of classic and modern literature. I hope to accomplish this task by providing my students with fantasy series like The Giver Quartet, series focusing on people of color like the Seeds of America Trilogy, and visual renditions of classics like the Jane Eyre graphic novel. Many of my students have either a 504 plan or an IEP; the images and brevity found in graphic novels will allow these students to experience the classics in a fun, understandable way. Without graphic novels, most of these students will never encounter the works of classic authors like Jane Austen or Charles Dickens. Please help me help my students grow as readers and develop their literary palates!
