I have the distinct pleasure of teaching remedial reading to approximately 100 students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade as an intervention specialist at Columbia Elementary School. Around 90% of my students live in poverty. Many are homeless or in foster care. Several have caregivers that have been or are incarcerated. Gang affiliation and substance abuse are realities that many of them live around on a day-to-day basis. Regardless, of these often harrowing circumstances, my students are resilient and eager to learn. They inspire me and I am grateful for the opportunity to help them better their chances in life through education. There is vast research that links early reading ability to later success in life. Because of this, I take my role very seriously and am constantly trying to improve my skills and my students' resources. Please consider a donation for my very worthy students. Thank you!
