My first grade students love the opportunity to collaborate together and talk about their learning with their peers. Starting our day with STEM based morning work tubs allows my students to think critically, build, create, and engage in hands-on play with one another. The Legos, K'nex, magnetic building tiles, Zoobs and other STEM building materials in this project will be placed in tubs at each of the table groups in my classroom each morning. After arriving at school and getting unpacked, students will have both guided inquiry task challenge cards and free choice with the materials that are in their tub that morning. This assortment of STEM and science materials will allow them to build a variety of things that are challenged to them, allow them to work in small groups to complete the tasks, and teach them valuable social skills through play. These morning work tub activities will be taking the place of morning worksheets in my classroom. Morning work tubs are engaging, fun and a great way to wake up our brains and to get ready to learn. Your generous donation will allow my students to start their day in a positive, creative, non-threatening way to get their imagination and creativity flowing! These STEM building materials will make a difference in our classroom by giving my students a variety of choices that they can use to be critical thinkers in the morning. Starting our day with play-based learning, rather than morning worksheets, will encourage even the most reluctant students to be more engaged in the school setting.
