My high school literacy students have struggled with reading all their lives. We feel the pressure as they move closer to graduation to have this year be the year that large gains are made, so our school developed a 48 minute literacy class with the goal to improve reading success. The students come from all walks of life with all types of needs, how they got to me is not important but how they leave me is. They like forensic science, sports, action and adventure stories. They struggle in their English classes and are already falling behind with homework completion because they don't think they can find reading interesting. They don't choose to open books in their free time and never volunteer to read aloud which would help with fluency, vocabulary building and comprehension strategies. They need success in each of these three areas.
