Children are affected negatively by excessive sounds in their learning environment. Klatte, Bergström, & Lachmann (2013) state, "Children are less able than adults to ignore irrelevant sounds, and thus are more susceptible to sound-induced disruption in both auditory and non-auditory tasks.” I plan to introduce the Yacker Tracker into the classroom as a way to educate students and provide consistency. This is a device that will give a visual prompt as to how loud the classroom is and help improve self-monitoring of individual noise levels in the classroom. The device looks like a traffic light with three colors: green, yellow and red. Green indicates an appropriate noise level, yellow illuminates when levels are approaching too loud and red shows that the noise level is excessive. The sensitivity can be adjusted based on preferences. By funding my project, you will provide my students with an opportunity to learn the very important skill of self-regulation, as well as the ability to have a more peaceful and beneficial educational experience.
