Games and puzzles make the entry into logical reasoning seem less intimidating. Students love to play...it's truly how they learn best. "Playing math" will take the fear out of "doing math", and encourage my students to be risk takers in the classroom. Theses puzzles and games will create an area in my classroom where students will be invited to play and explore with mathematics. The tessellation puzzles will help students learn to see patterns and different solutions in a creative, no stress way. The logic games will help them to strengthen their logical reasoning skills while having fun. The ultimate goal is for students to equate math with fun instead of something that is hard and a series of steps to memorize. I hope to rotate the games and puzzles each week in order to keep the Math Play area fresh and novel throughout the school year. Some of the puzzles will encourage individual exploration while other games will help my students learn to negotiate peer relationships and getting along with others. Turning their fear of being wrong into joy at discovering a new idea or pattern will ideally create mathematicians who are willing to take a risk and try a new strategy when challenged with concepts in the classroom. Instead of being afraid of math, my students can become playful mathematicians. Let's play math!
