My urban Seattle K-5 elementary school prides itself on its dedication to building strong relationships with its students and families. About 1/3 of our students are learning English, 1/5 have learning disabilities, 1/5 are advanced learners, and 1/2 receive free and reduced lunch. As the school's music teacher, I have the privilege of leveraging music as a powerful community strengthening agent. My students are the true experts in the music classroom, with their expert knowledge of their own lived musical experiences, needs, and desires. As such, they deserve every possible opportunity to explore and share their truths in this giant musical gift exchange.
