Upon first glance you wouldn't be able to tell that my students live in public housing or have parents trying to overcome addiction or merely survive each day. These kids are full of life, zest, and enthusiasm; so much so that it appears they have it all when in reality they have very little once they leave school. My students attend a very unique inclusion charter school in Manhattan where family involvement is high, resources are available, and collaboration is not only valued but a core mission of the school. The school is child-centered and any extra funding goes to giving children additional academic opportunities but also extra curricular enrichment like swimming lessons and incredible class trips.
