I really try to get to know more about my students than just their scores on assessments. Our county has a very high incidence of poverty. We are a Title 1 school with a predominantly African-American student body. I know that my children do not always have the opportunity to have enriching experiences. They often need the hug and the listening ear as much or more than they need me to teach them to count to 10 or recognize the letters in their names. The kids need to know that they are cared for when they walk through our door. They need to know that whatever they saw, heard or experienced before they walked through the door, they can be learners at school and there are people there who care for them. Parents at our school have not always seen school in a positive light themselves so we try to find ways to have them become involved with their students at school by having family nights and programs to involve the whole family. My kids are awesome and I enjoy helping them learn and grow!
