I teach Math Connections in a Title 1 middle school in Georgia. This class is composed of 6th - 8th grade students who are struggling in their regular mathematics class, or who failed the required standardized testing the previous year. These students are usually one to two grade levels behind as related to their mathematics skills. They are students who are often disconnected or distracted within the classroom because they have not had success. The purpose of my class is to provide students with the opportunity to preview the topics that they will cover in their regular math class. I also work on helping to develop basic math skills in which they are lacking. Providing the students with this head start will allow the students to enter the classroom ahead of the game rather than playing catch up. It also helps students improve their confidence in their ability.
