As first graders, we spend the entire year working on the building blocks of their future math skills. We are learning to problem solve and that if we take our time and look at math as puzzles to solve we can do amazing things. So many of our students come to first grade thinking they can't do math. They don't understand why their answer is not that same as mine. These are the children that have not been in school a full academic year, because of Covid-19. They have gaps where they may not have been as structured as years before in their academic and learning processes. They are learning to building their stamina to keep going and keep trying hard things. The need for those fun and engaging opportunities to practice the skills we are learning and to cooperatively learn to play games together in small groups and by using the rules of the games we have chosen. They need to be able to explore mathematic and scientific skills and concepts. By using these games like the pop it games, puzzles, dominos they have the opportunity to practice both math skills and social emotional skills like, sharing, helping others and taking turns. My students need your help to help them bridge the gap left behind from Covid-19. They need the opportunity to create meaningful mathematic experiences that will help them when they move on in their academic career.
