The Scholastic Science Spin and Scholastic News subscriptions will help my students read not only nonfiction books but also articles at their level and about topics that interest them. They can read these on their own, with the entire class or in small groups. These usually spark their interests in topics and reading while getting them excited to learn more and ask deeper questions. The three classroom library sets will hone in on some common topics that the students in 2nd grade typically love reading more about due to the interest that is sparked from the reading content and curriculum already in place. The students in my class have devoured the biographies in my current class library. The sets will allow multiple children to read the same text as each title has multiple copies. Learning about weather is a big thrill and the weather set will come in handy during not only our ELA unit but also some of our science discussions and topics. Finally, the life cycle series will help them to gain a better understanding of many of the habitats and animals that they encounter. They will work in small groups to teach the other groups about their student selected life cycle series. Working on a poster to depict and explain the life cycle chosen. These resources will truly help my second graders this year to become more confident readers and to read as an opportunity to gain understanding, gather information, and then help others to learn new information as well.
