These texts will provide students with real life examples of times when tolerance was not practiced. Through reading these texts, students will not only increase their literacy levels, but will see the consequences of not being tolerant of those different from them. Tolerance can be difficult for adolescents. These texts provide an opportunity for the students to connect with characters that are genuine and faced with the problem not being tolerant. Authentic literature in the classroom is important to increasing literacy as well as teaching life lessons and good citizenship. These two pieces of literature are highly engaging and offer good life lessons.
