The students in my classroom are surrounded by technology. We learn to build robots, and we use them to help us understand science. However, the drones and robots that we use require small computers -- phones or tablets -- to program and control these awesome little machines. In the past, we have used donated old cell phones for this, but the new apps required to operate the machines will not work with the hand-me-down devices. We need inexpensive tablets that can run the programs, with screens big enough to write computer code and see what the robot's camera is seeing. My students know that the first human footprints on Mars will probably be made by someone sitting in a middle school classroom right now. Wouldn't it be fantastic if those footprints belonged to them?
