Bright, resilient, hurting, broken, and/or resource-poor are descriptives of my seventh/eighth grade students with behavior challenges that are placed in a Categorical Emotionally Impaired classroom. Our school day includes a lot of joy and quite a few concerns. We address the behavioral concerns with a Point/Level Behavior Management System that assists each student with managing their behavior by earning points, levels, rewards and additional privileges. Every Friday, we hold a Levels Meeting to calculate the weekly point-average of each student. We celebrate the students whose average earned them a level promotion and encourage the students whose average earned themselves a level drop. The weekly Levels Meeting takes place in our classroom, housed within a K8 General Education building in Michigan. Our school has approximately 465 students and is considered economically disadvantaged by state standards.
