My World Language students have been learning that there are many countries where people speak the languages we learn. Recently we watched Chimamanda Adichie's TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story," and we learned that we need to understand the many countries where these languages are spoken, not simply accepting the single stories/misconceptions we hear from the media, the world, or those in power. Telling stories is the best way to share a culture, and I would like to have stories and informational text from all the countries where these languages are spoken! I have researched and chosen MANY books, and any that I receive will open my students' minds to the world! We learn about each other by telling our stories, and my students at AES need more good literature to better understand the world! During this time when we are often so divided, kids need to learn about others in order to better establish commonalities for human connection, as well as understand differences for celebration! Learning about how we are similar and different in this world helps students to be more open-minded and caring, and encourages them to be risk-takers, communicating with more diverse people. The more we understand others, the less we fear the unknown and the more effectively we can work toward peace on earth.
