Our new math curriculum incorporates the use of manipulatives on a daily basis. The most common one is the Rekenrek. We've been using a large one in front of the class, but many have been struggling to make the connection of number bonds and decomposing numbers by using this manipulative. By having a Rekenrek for each student, my students will develop self-efficacy and be able to take ownership in his/her learning. It will help them to develop a concrete connection using hands-on learning and written expression of number bonds. By using the large magnetic Rekenrek on the board, I will be able to model the problems as the students actively recreate it on their own personal Rekenreks at their desks.
