Today, we live in a world where we celebrate our own identities, however America strives to be seen as a strong and united nation. The young children in our schools are faced with many challenges about their own identity and discovering where they belong in society. The books that I have chosen to order will help my students with their personal journey of self discovery. These informational texts come from the Louisiana Believes 5th Grade Unit and illustrate, "how members of a culture meld into communities while trying to maintain cultural identity and honor their ancestors," (https://learnzillion.com/resources/109492-shutting-out-the-sky/). These books can open doors to conversations and let children know they are never alone.
