I am looking to help some students who don't usually have a love for reading find a connection through stories that they can relate to. The students in my class have struggled with reading for quite a few years now, and I want to help them make a connection to a skill that will take them through the rest of their lives. The books that I have chosen, The Bluford Series, have characters who are similar to people that my students know and may even be very similar to some of the students themselves. The books are written about students who are living their everyday lives and trying to make it through school, but they are dealing with different situations at school and home that force them to make choices, set priorities, and deal with the consequences of their actions. The books are easy to read and packed with excitement. I am hoping to create lessons with a book club feel to them so that the students can almost forget that they are reading being graded on their assignments and activities. I want them to be able to have a school reading class experience like none other.
