I work at a Title 1 school (low-income/high poverty) in South Seattle for the Seattle Public School District. 72% of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and two thirds of my students are English Language Learners (English is not their first language). Despite the challenges my students face inside and out of school, they are incredibly resilient, full of grit and passion, silly and spunky, and the most caring individuals who are going to change our world into a more accepting and compassionate place. Working in a Title 1 school, funding is tight. I spend a good portion of my paycheck each month to purchase food and classroom materials for my students to make sure they have everything they need. My goal is to fill my room with fun and engaging materials to create a warm and welcoming environment, where students feel inspired, safe and represented.
