Around 40% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, and most simply don't have access to high-quality non-fiction reading materials at home. We also have a large special education program, as well as a program for English Language Learners. We have many students who struggle with reading and can get discouraged by this. However, we have found that they are often fascinated when they get to read about current events and facts about our world. Our students love learning about the latest space exploration or efforts to save endangered animals. They enjoy reading about the cultures of people around the world and discussing important events that affect the lives of those around them. They are constantly looking for more non-fiction materials to get their hands on!
