My school was recently evacuated because the school structure was damaged and Department of Buildings claimed that conditions were "perilous to life." My fellow teachers and I were allotted about 20 minutes to gather things from our classrooms. Since then, we've only been able to fill two boxes, even though we were recently told that we will be homeless until February. We have been temporarily placed in another school building, but we have no supplies and NO BOOKS! This is devastating to my students, who are bright, energetic 8th graders. Even in the best of circumstances, my urban New York school cannot afford the basic supplies that are common in other classrooms and our new reality is even worse.
