In our classroom, books are valued and treasured. Adding these titles to our collection will enhance our library and add to our print-rich environment. All of these books have been selected with my students in mind--series that engage, quality non-fiction to inform, and high-interest fiction that entertains and allows them to think deeply and critically. Students will be able to select these books independently during our workshop time, building on their independence as readers. There is great power in a classroom library; with these books, students will be able to open doors to new places, take fantastic adventures, and learn about a variety of topics to not only help them succeed in the classroom, but also to help them become literate and engaged citizens in the world. Reading engagement has been shown to have a profound impact on overall academic success. By giving students the opportunity to choose the content of their reading, their motivation and comprehension across other subject areas will increase as well. In the words of Lucy Calkins, our libraries should be "filled with awe-inspiring, spine-tingling, mind-bending books that deeply engage students, strengthen reading and thinking skills, and inspire kids to become lifelong readers." This project will help bring those books right to their fingertips, motivating young thinkers for years to come!
