Right now, my kindergarten and 1st grade students only have a small, old rug that they sit on when they listen to stories. The ability of younger children to sit still, pay attention and not cause a ruckus seems to be in inverse proportion to the distance between them; they need enough personal space so they don't bother each other and disrupt the reading. A clean, warm rug would also be a much more pleasant space on which my older students can relax and read a good book. When my older students finish their research or project work for the day, they're allowed to use the rest of the period to read their library books.
