There are many books in my classroom but most of them are older, some are outdated, and the majority have white characters. My students are very diverse and unfortunately, they don't see themselves in the books we have. I am hoping to build my classroom library to include books that have characters of color. It is important for my students to identify with the characters and stories in the books they read. To develop a lifelong love of reading, they need to be able to recognize themselves within the pages. Many of the children I teach don't love to read. Some of them struggle with decoding, others struggle with fluency, while others simply haven't found a book that speaks to them yet. I believe that there are books out there that are right for each and every person, and we just need to identify which books are the "right fit." I am hopeful that having a plethora of interesting books with characters of color (and books that include words in Spanish) will allow my students to develop a curiosity and excitement about books and reading. Thank you for your support!
