Having the proper equipment is the key to success in any venture. Students need camera equipment, lenses and the like to capture their time in high school while building skills that apply to the careers of tomorrow. Photojournalism and photography are an integral part of our society and culture. With the rise of social media and the selfie, true meaningful photography has gotten lost in the shuffle. Students in my yearbook journalism class are working daily to increase their skills and to create images and compositions that stand out. Doing this with only point-and-shoot cameras is next to impossible, we need a camera that can be used for close-up and distance photography. Having a camera in my students' hands and providing a hands-on learning experience is the only way to make this a reality. Students will have the opportunity to daily learn from their work, their successes, and their mistakes with photography in real-time. In addition to providing beautiful images, this addition will support our language arts program. Students will build captions, headlines, and stories about the images that they capture. Making students take a leadership role, where they take the photos, they write the copy and they are responsible for their own success is the path to college- and career-readiness.
