My students have a wide range of behavior and emotional disorders. Sensory items play a huge role in helping them to cope when a situation triggers their flight or fight responses. Colors, sounds, and textured touch all help to keep the student engaged in learning and self-regulating. School is stressful for most of my students, and this is an opportunity for me to provide what they need. Most of the time, a 5-minute break with a container of Playdoh is enough to curb the temptation to act out, scream, or cry. The items for the project also serve as tangible rewards. They can see that a hard day's work pays off—equivalent to an adult's paycheck. And my reward? Their shrieks of delight!
