I am requesting a new Macbook Pro Laptop for my diverse group of NYC Title 1 4th graders and myself . As we march forward with the pandemic into 2021, my current 2012 laptop can't keep up with all the applications and extensions I need to teach my general and special education students. Due to the economic hardships my city is facing, there is no money to replace it. Remarkably, every thing I need to teach every subject can be done with a laptop. For example, a 4th grade math standard is calculating area and perimeter. While the arithmetic is manageable for my students, the concept is challenging to convey. With the new laptop, I plan to use iMovie and Google slides to pose a real real world question: Can Ms. Gutwillig's car fit into her (1920s era) tiny garage and allow her to open/close the car doors. In addition to this, my students are writing essays about the pressures they feeI from their parents and the stress they put on themselves to do well. They are also writing about their feelings of loneliness. Technology, allows me to coach these writers in the moment by typing in feedback in Google docs, as they are writing. Also, I have been able to identify new tools like voice to text in Google docs. This frees up the students with learning disabilities to express themselves, while still learning spelling and punctuation from the errors they make. Lastly, I am specifically excited about our upcoming partnership with a local NYC museum. A teaching artist will create art with my students based on a current exhibition. Without a working laptop, this opportunity will be missed. I appreciate this chance to tell you a little about my school.
