I am a first year teacher originally from Iowa, and I teach 6th grade English/Language Arts. I guide approximately 85 students each day over the course of three class periods. The reason I say "approximately" is because we regularly have students enroll/drop from school due to their high mobility. 85% of the students in my school live in poverty. These kids face battles unimaginable to most people, but they still manage to come to school smiling and ready to learn! Despite their background, they are the funny, eccentric, and motivated students you see in every school! In my classroom, students learn by applying reading strategies in books that interest them, and I find them to be much more motivated and learn better through this method.
