The students are good kids, trapped in a difficult situation. The urban school district has limited funding for programs in music and the students potentially miss out on great opportunities due to lack of funding. The music program has boomed over the past six years and the students are excited about what we are doing. For some of these students, music has become their escape from the trials of living in the inner city, and they are pouring out extra time and work towards the class. We have seen enough increased interest that we now have too few music stands for the full ensemble and the students are forced to share sometimes three students per stand. This small number of quality stands actually helps dramatically to allow the students to easier see their music.
