My students are first-time Spanish students. As Spanish I students, my class is their introduction to the Spanish language and culture (and to many, their first foreign language experience). My students are initially afraid to speak or write, but once they start they are very eager and want to say and write everything that comes to their minds. Therefore, I teach them the skill of using reference materials to find the information you need in life. Our class set of dictionaries will teach my students about the great opportunity to supplement your education with the information you can gain from reference materials. My school is a high poverty school district. Many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and have minimal exposure to reference materials or instruction in taking ownership of their education.
