Our students are truly creative and are very rooted in the traditional Hawaiian "local" culture. We are very diverse with a majority Pacific Islander, Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Filipino, and a few Caucasians. Our school community embraces the culture, and as an art teacher, I try to help students communicate and express their unique island experience since it is much different from the mainland. As a teacher from the mainland, I see the contrast with clarity and I feel honored to be a part of this community. While a large number of our students come from poverty or working class families, they still have abundant smiles and live life with Aloha. They are vibrant, full of spirit and show unity. As islanders, they have inherent kinesthetic skills and this shows in their artwork. When engaged, they can show amazing talent and unveil treasures symbolic of their heritage. But with this pride comes difficulty in art. They do not want to look weak, and without tools to succeed, they will regress rather easily.
