My middle school students are emerging scientists at an urban neighborhood school identified as a Federal Title I school, where 100% of students receive free lunch. As state and national science standards shift to adopt the Next Generation Science Standards, my students are in need of materials for active investigations and laboratory periods. Most of my students are below level in reading and math, and most discretionary school/district resources, when available, are spent to support those areas. Resources for Science and STEM have been hard to come by. My students come from low-income households, yet come to school everyday and respond positively to hands-on learning/labs and their annual school-wide STEM Expo.My students inspire me to live up to their expectations that science can be fun and to provide them opportunities that may not be available in other district schools.
